How to choose paper for lino printing
Hand printing or a press?
For a baren or spoon, lightweight printmaking papers are often easier to work with because less pressure is needed to make contact across the image. A press gives more scope to experiment with heavier sheets, but paper surface, ink and pressure still need to work together. A heavier paper is not automatically a better printmaking paper.
Surface and intended result
A smoother surface can help reproduce fine lines and solid areas evenly. A textured sheet brings its own character but may need a different approach to inking and pressure. For detailed work or repeatable editions, test a small quantity with your actual block and ink before buying the full paper requirement.
Weight, sheet size and borders
GSM means grams per square metre: it describes paper weight, rather than a guaranteed thickness or printing performance. Choose the final sheet size with room for the image, borders and any registration tabs. Check whether you are buying individual sheets, packs or rolls, and allow spare paper for proofs and setup.
As a practical guide, paper weights for lino printing might be grouped as follows. These are approximate examples, rather than fixed industry categories:
- Lightweight: around 30–100 GSM — for example, 45, 70 or 90 GSM. Often a useful starting point for hand printing with a baren or spoon.
- Medium-weight: around 120–200 GSM — for example, 125, 145 or 180 GSM. A more substantial sheet; test the surface and ink transfer with your hand-printing or press setup.
- Heavyweight: around 220–300 GSM and above — for example, 220, 250 or 285 GSM. Often chosen for a substantial finished print, especially with a press; hand printing may need more careful pressure and paper selection.
For multicolour work, use the same paper consistently and check its position between layers. Follow the paper and ink guidance if you intend to dampen sheets; not every combination needs it.
