Honing, stropping or sharpening?
Regular honing or stropping refines an edge that is still in reasonable condition. Sharpening removes more metal to restore the cutting edge or its geometry. A chipped, rounded or badly damaged blade may need more than a polishing system; seek advice if you are unsure how to restore it.
Choosing a maintenance system
- Shaped strops: the Flexcut SlipStrop includes profiles for maintaining gouges and V-tools with honing compound. Use a profile that fits the tool without forcing the edge against an unsuitable shape.
- Polishing cloth and support: the Michihamono EZ Care set uses an abrasive-impregnated cloth and a shaped wooden plate for edge maintenance. Replacement EZ Care cloths are consumables for that system, rather than a complete starter set.
- Sharpening stone: the RGM dual-grit stone offers coarser and finer abrasive faces. It requires control of the existing bevel; a flat stone alone does not match every internal gouge profile.
What should a beginner buy?
Start with a maintenance system that suits the tools you already own and follow its instructions. Preserve the manufacturer's bevel instead of guessing a new angle. Check whether interchangeable blades are intended to be maintained or replaced before buying sharpening equipment.
