Which lino printing ink should I choose?
- Water-based: a practical starting point for paper printing and straightforward cleanup. Keep tools clean during the session and follow the product instructions before ink dries on the roller or block.
- Traditional oil-based: consider these where you want the handling of an oil-based relief ink. Check the manufacturer's cleaning method and leave time for the printed layer to dry before handling or overprinting.
- Safe-wash: this describes the cleanup method, not a separate water-based ink type. Caligo Safe Wash Relief is oil-based but cleans with liquid soap and cold water. It dries by oxidation and polymerisation, rather than simply by water evaporating.
Paper or fabric?
For prints on paper, choose a relief ink and paper combination suited to your method. For clothing or cloth bags, use a fabric block-printing formula and check its washing and curing instructions. Do not assume a paper ink will become wash-resistant on fabric, or that screen-printing ink is interchangeable with block-printing ink.
Drying and cleanup
Drying depends on the formula, ink-film thickness, paper and studio conditions. Touch-dry is not always ready for the next layer or for washing. Follow the specific ink's instructions, remove excess ink before cleaning, and test your chosen combination before an edition.
