Seven Woody tools for a wider range of cuts
The Michihamono Woody 7-Piece Wood Carving and Linocut Tool Set gives you several widths and blade shapes for developing a carved design. Alongside the profiles in the five-piece set, it includes a 4.5 mm flat chisel and 9 mm U-gouge. These additions provide more choice when moving between small details, defined edges and wider cleared areas.
The seven-tool selection
- Flat chisel: 4.5 mm.
- Round-edged flat chisel: 7.5 mm.
- Skew knife: 7.5 mm.
- U-gouges: 3 mm, 6 mm and 9 mm.
- V-gouge: 3 mm.
Having three U-gouge widths helps you choose a cut that fits the area in front of you. A narrower tool is easier to place in a small space, while a broader gouge can remove a wider strip from the background. The flat and round-edged flat chisels produce different edge shapes, and the skew knife and V-gouge let you explore more defined marks.
Built as individual hand tools
Each tool has a steel blade and a birch wood handle. The overall length is approximately 170 mm. This is the wooden-box version of the Woody set, supplied with caps to cover the cutting edges between uses. The box keeps the tools together for a workspace, class or regular carving session.
Use the extra profiles deliberately
Try each tool on scrap material before beginning a design. Mark the cuts you find most useful, then use those tests as a reference while carving your block. Start with a clear outline, remove the background in stages and inspect a trial impression before refining the image. Choosing a tool for the space you need to clear is more useful than using every profile in every project.
Secure your workpiece and keep your supporting hand outside the cutting path. Clean and dry the blades, maintain the edges and fit the caps before putting the tools away. Compare the smaller set on the Woody Tool Kit listing.
