Space for a larger rectangular composition
The 9 × 11.75 inch Speedball Speedy-Carve block is a soft pink carving surface for detailed stamps and relief printing. This 9×11.75 inch block provides a broad area for an illustration with several elements, a landscape or a collection of related motifs. Plan the whole surface first so the larger size supports the image rather than adding unnecessary clearing work.
Plan the image before carving
Make a full-size paper outline and place the main shapes before drawing fine detail. Compare the solid areas that will print with the spaces you intend to remove. For several smaller motifs, leave practical gaps between them and decide how you will handle the block. The nominal inch measurements do not describe an exact A4 sheet.
Transfer your drawing and check the marks
Draw with a soft pencil on paper, place the drawing pencil-side down on the block and hold it steady while rubbing the reverse. Reinforce faint lines with pencil. Check lettering and image orientation before carving. The raised areas carry ink; remove the spaces that should remain blank. Support the block on a stable work surface and work in controlled cuts.
Ink, proof and refine
Use water-soluble or oil-based block-printing ink and follow its directions for your chosen paper or fabric. Make a proof impression before starting a batch. Use an early proof to review the balance of the composition. Mark any areas that need further clearing before returning to the block, rather than removing more material without checking the printed result. Clean the finished block according to the ink maker’s instructions and let it dry before storage.

Supplied as one pink, latex-free carving block containing PVC. Nominal size: 9 × 11.75 inches, approximately 228.6 × 298.45 mm. Metric figures are conversions of the stated inch size. Tools, ink and paper are purchased separately. Speedball specifies hand carving and excludes use with laser cutters.
