Plan a single-colour print

Use black to explore the relationship between the printed image and the spaces left unprinted. A simple motif, lettering design or repeated shape can make a useful first screen. Check the arrangement on paper before preparing the stencil, then make a trial impression on the material you intend to use. Look at both the fine details and the larger printed areas before deciding whether to adjust the stencil or printing technique.

Paper, wood and cardboard

This water-based ink is formulated for use with a screen and squeegee. Speedball lists paper, wood and cardboard as suitable surfaces. It is not intended for washfast fabric printing. For changes in consistency, use an appropriate screen-printing modifier rather than adding water.

Colour and studio care

Speedball rates Black as Excellent for lightfastness, and the Acrylic Screen Printing Ink range is listed with ACMI AP certification. Clean ink from the screen and tools with soap and water before it dries, and follow the directions supplied with the ink.
