Which printmaking press should I choose?
Choose by technique
- Etching and intaglio: compare our RGM tabletop etching presses. Check the model's stated printing area and plate compatibility, rather than assuming the full bed size is the printable area.
- Lino and etching on one press: the RGM School Lino and Etching Press is designed for 3.2mm linoleum and 1mm zinc plates. It is the RGM option to consider when you need the stated lino compatibility; do not assume every etching press has the same roller clearance.
- Portable, light-pressure printing: the Akua 20in Pin Press is designed for monotype, drypoint and collagraph. It is a hand-operated roller used over the plate and paper on a flat surface, so its printing method differs from a fixed etching press.
Measure your print and your workspace
Check both the image size and the paper size you plan to use. Allow room around the image for borders, handling and registration. For a roller-bed press, leave space for the bed to travel and for the handle to turn. Check the press weight, support requirements and fixing instructions before deciding where it will sit.
Check what is included
Read the selected model's specification for blankets, bed and other supplied parts. Paper, ink, plates and blocks are separate choices unless the listing explicitly includes them. Check the current delivery information too, particularly for presses made to order.
For a closer comparison, read our guide to different types of printmaking press. Choose suitable printmaking paper alongside the press so you can test the complete setup.
