Choosing a printmaking registration setup

  • Pins and tabs: tabs attached to the paper locate onto fixed pins, helping you return each sheet to the same position. Hickman Design steel pins pair with our two-hole tabs.
  • Registration corners: paper registration corners give reference edges for positioning the block and sheet. They suit printers who want to align borders without attaching tabs to every sheet.
  • Registration boards: the Talented Mr B device provides a repeatable block-positioning setup. Choose the board size and insert for your lino; older versions require their matching inserts.

Reduction or multi-block printing?

For reduction printing, keep the remaining block and each sheet registered as you carve and print successive colours. For multi-block work, position each block against the same reference and check alignment with a proof before printing the edition. Either approach needs a stable setup and consistent paper positioning.

For press use, check clearance, board thickness and packing before printing. The Talented Mr B board is approximately 9mm thick and may require adjustments to the press setup.

Follow our step-by-step registration guide, watch the pins demonstration or see the registration corners in use.
