A square surface for centred designs and repeats
The 11.75 × 11.75 inch Speedball Speedy-Carve block is a soft pink carving surface for detailed stamps and relief printing. The 11.75 inch square format gives you equal space in both directions for a central illustration, decorative panel or repeating tile. It also lets you arrange several smaller blocks on one sheet before deciding how to divide the material.
Plan the image before carving
Fold a paper template to find the centre, then test the layout around that point. A circular wreath, symmetrical plant form or geometric repeat can use the square deliberately. For a repeating pattern, plan how opposing edges relate before carving. Keep clear gaps between individual stamps if you are arranging several separate designs on the same block.
Transfer your drawing and check the marks
Draw with a soft pencil on paper, place the drawing pencil-side down on the block and hold it steady while rubbing the reverse. Reinforce faint lines with pencil. Check lettering and image orientation before carving. The raised areas carry ink; remove the spaces that should remain blank. Support the block on a stable work surface and work in controlled cuts.
Ink, proof and refine
Use water-soluble or oil-based block-printing ink and follow its directions for your chosen paper or fabric. Make a proof impression before starting a batch. Lay several paper copies of your design together to test a repeat. Checking the joins on paper is easier than discovering an unwanted gap after the block has been carved. Clean the finished block according to the ink maker’s instructions and let it dry before storage.
