Description
A traditional plywood for Japanese woodblock printing
The Economy Shina Japanese Plywood (300×450mm, 4mm thick) is the material of choice in Japan for Mokuhanga, the traditional water-based woodblock printing method. Constructed with a shina veneer over a lauan wood core, it provides a balance of responsiveness, affordability, and reliability for printmakers.
Sustainable and fine-grained
Shina (Tilia Japonica), grown in the colder northern regions of Japan, is valued for its fine and almost imperceptible grain. This quality makes it particularly suitable for designs requiring clean lines and detailed carving, as the grain does not interfere with the image.
Carving performance and versatility
Soft and easy to cut – Excellent for beginners and professionals alike.
Holds detail – Produces sharp edges with minimal splintering.
Ink compatibility – Suitable for Mokuhanga water-based pigments and oil-based inks used in Western relief printing.
Tool friendly – Works well with Japanese carving knives, chisels, and Western gouges.
A natural material with character
As with all plywoods, internal voids may occur. These can be identified by holding the board against a strong light, helping artists to plan their carving around any natural imperfections.
