Description
Khadi – Mitsumata – 54 × 80cm – 30gsm – Nepalese Lightweight Smooth Natural Washi Paper – 5 Sheets
Khadi Mitsumata Nepalese Washi is an exceptionally lightweight, smooth and delicately textured handmade paper, crafted using traditional fibre preparation and sheet-forming techniques. Made from the inner bark fibres of lokta and argeli plants, grown in the high-altitude forests of the Himalayan foothills, this paper offers a refined balance of softness, strength and natural beauty, making it ideal for fine printmaking, drawing and delicate artistic work.
Lokta (Daphne bholua), harvested above 3000 metres, produces strong and durable fibres, while argeli (Edgeworthia papyrifera), harvested above 2000 metres, contributes softness and a smooth finish. Argeli fibre is also used in traditional Japanese papermaking, where it is known as mitsumata, prized for its fine surface and excellent ink response. Both fibres are sustainably harvested by cutting the plant above ground level, allowing natural regrowth and re-harvesting every three to four years.
Khadi mountain papers are uniquely manufactured using soda ash rather than caustic soda, a gentler process that preserves fibre integrity and results in stronger, longer-lasting sheets compared to most modern Nepalese papers. This method also produces environmentally beneficial runoff that can be reused as fertiliser.
Each sheet is formed using the traditional Japanese nagashizuki dipping and layering technique, where fibres are evenly dispersed on a fine bamboo screen (su), then pressed and carefully separated before drying. This produces a consistent, smooth surface with excellent fibre distribution, even at an ultra-lightweight 30gsm.
Perfect for mokuhanga, woodblock printing, fine drawing, ink, chine-collé and delicate printmaking techniques, this paper provides sensitivity, strength and beautiful handmade character.
