A five-piece Chicky set for controlled carving
The Michihamono Chicky 5-Piece Wood Carving and Linocut Chisel Set brings together five useful profiles in a Kiri wood box. It is a compact selection for learning how different blades shape a woodblock or lino design. The cutting edges use Blue Paper Steel No. 2, and the tools are supplied sharpened with birch wood handles.
Five blade profiles
- Round-edged flat chisel: 7.5 mm.
- Skew knife: 7.5 mm.
- U-gouges: 3 mm and 6 mm.
- V-gouge: 3 mm.
Use the two U-gouge widths to explore rounded cuts at different scales. The V-gouge creates a more angular groove, while the skew knife and round-edged flat chisel offer other ways to define the image. A practice block is a useful place to compare these marks before committing them to your finished design.
Compare U and V lino cutting tools to choose a profile for each mark.
Handle, edge and storage details
The overall tool length is approximately 170 mm. Birch handles provide a wooden grip for these individual hand tools, and the supplied blade caps cover the cutting edges when they are put away. The Kiri box keeps the five profiles together and gives each session a straightforward starting point: select the tools you need, then return them to the box afterwards.
Make the first project manageable
Choose a clear motif with room around the main shapes. Transfer the drawing onto your chosen block and remove the background in small stages. Check a trial impression before refining the edges or narrowing a line. Looking at the printed image as well as the carving helps you decide where the next cut is needed.
Keep your work secure and your supporting hand outside the cutting path. Clean and dry the blades after use and maintain the edges as part of regular tool care. This listing is the five-piece version. For a flat chisel and a third U-gouge width, compare the seven-piece set on the original Chicky Chisels listing.
