The Japanese Katsura Side Grain Wood Block (150×200mm, 13mm thick) is a traditional solid plank block used for relief printmaking. With its fine, even texture and excellent durability, it is particularly suited for mokuhanga, the Japanese method of water-based woodblock printing.

Katsura wood is increasingly used as an alternative to cherry wood, which is becoming more expensive and harder to source. These blocks are cut side-grain (plank style), giving them a smooth, stable carving surface that holds sharp detail and crisp lines. At 13mm thick, the block is sturdy enough to resist warping, and both sides can be carved, extending its usefulness.

Preparing the surface
For best results, we recommend lightly sanding the surface along the grain with a fine 1000 grit sandpaper before carving. If you intend to use both sides, take care to protect the underside from dents and scratches while working, to maintain a smooth carving surface.
