Description

A traditional plywood for Japanese woodblock printing

The Economy Shina Japanese Plywood (225×300mm, 4mm thick) is one of the most widely used surfaces in Japan for Mokuhanga, the traditional water-based woodblock printing method. Combining a shina veneer with a lauan wood core, it offers a lightweight, affordable and highly responsive material for printmakers of all levels.

Sustainable and fine-grained

Sourced from Tilia Japonica, a sustainable timber grown in colder regions of Japan, shina is valued for its fine, almost imperceptible grain. This allows artists to carve with precision, free from distracting textures, making it especially suited for work that requires crisp edges, smooth lines, and detailed imagery.

Carving performance and versatility

  • Soft and easy to cut – User-friendly for beginners, while offering the control professionals need.
  • Sharp and clean results – Holds edges without splintering or tearing.
  • Ink compatibility – Ideal for Mokuhanga water-based pigments as well as oil-based inks.
  • Tool friendly – Suitable for Japanese carving tools and Western-style gouges alike.

A natural material with character

As with all natural plywoods, internal voids may be present. By holding the board against a strong light, these can be located before carving, allowing artists to plan their designs with confidence and avoid interruptions to their work.
