Sosaku – Japanese Inking Brushes – 10 Piece Set

The Sosaku Japanese Inking Brushes – 10 Piece Set is a versatile, studio-ready collection of tools commonly used in traditional woodblock printing and relief printmaking. This thoughtfully assembled set includes creative inking brushes, a water brush for paper preparation, and a plastic baren, making it suitable for both learning environments and experienced printmakers.

The creative brushes feature bristles with finely split tips, producing a soft, flexible edge that holds ink exceptionally well. While the ends remain gentle, the body of the brush has strong resilience, allowing ink to spread smoothly and evenly across the block surface. This balance of softness and strength helps achieve consistent ink coverage without streaking.

Each creative brush is carefully brushed and processed to improve durability and performance. After use, the brushes should be stored with the bristles facing downward, as shown in reference images, to help maintain their shape and extend their working life.

The included water brush is designed specifically for dampening printmaking paper. By thoroughly soaking newspaper with water and placing printmaking paper between the sheets, moisture can be transferred evenly and gently. This method is particularly effective for preparing paper for hand printing and mokuhanga techniques.

Completing the set is a one-piece moulded plastic baren. While its sliding performance is modest, it offers reliable pressure and control, making it suitable for beginners through to intermediate and advanced users who want a dependable, easy-to-use baren.

Set contents: Creative brushes 15mm ×2, 20mm ×2, 24mm ×1, creative brushes 60mm ×3, water brush 125mm ×1, plastic baren ×1. Materials include horsehair for creative brushes, wool for the water brush, and durable plastic for the baren.
