Sosaku Sumi baren for fine-line woodblock printing
The Michihamono Sosaku Sumi Bamboo Baren is the fine-printing version of the 13 cm Sosaku range. It is designed for key blocks, delicate carved areas and fine lines, making it a useful choice when the character of the print depends on small details. The baren applies pressure to the back of the paper so the image transfers from your woodblock without a press.
Construction and size
- Version: Sumi, for fine and detailed printing.
- Diameter: approximately 130 mm.
- Cover and handle: bamboo sheath.
- Inner coil: twisted paper string hardened with varnish.
- Backing disc: ABS plastic.
This construction combines a traditional bamboo rubbing surface with a plastic support disc and paper-string core. It is not a solid bamboo disc. The inner coil is the Sumi version, selected for the detailed printing work that distinguishes it from the Beta baren.
Working with the Sumi baren
Secure the block, position your paper carefully and work across the printing area with controlled movements. Begin with a trial impression to judge the pressure and colour coverage for your particular paper and design. Fine linework benefits from checking the whole image, including small corners and isolated marks, before lifting the sheet away.
Use the baren as part of your usual mokuhanga setup with a prepared block, suitable colour and printing paper. A compact illustrated motif, lettering design or carved key block is a helpful way to get familiar with the feel of the rubbing surface.

Care and choosing the right version
Michihamono recommends a small amount of vegetable oil on the bamboo sheath to improve movement. Rotate the backing disc gradually during use to spread wear over the sheath. For wide flat areas or thicker paper, compare the Beta version on the original Sosaku Baren listing. Both versions have a 13 cm diameter; their printing purpose is the key difference.
