Five Woody tools for learning to carve
The Michihamono Woody 5-Piece Wood Carving and Linocut Tool Set offers a small, practical selection of blade profiles for making carved images. It is a useful introduction to working by hand, whether you are planning a woodblock print, a lino design or a simple wood-carving project. Five separate tools let you change the shape of the cut without changing a blade in a handle.
Tools in this set
- Round-edged flat chisel: 7.5 mm.
- Skew knife: 7.5 mm.
- U-gouges: 3 mm and 6 mm.
- V-gouge: 3 mm.
The smaller U-gouge makes a narrower rounded cut, while the 6 mm gouge is useful when you want to remove a wider strip. The V profile creates a different kind of mark, and the skew knife and round-edged flat chisel add options for defining edges and clearing spaces. Try the tools on a spare piece of your chosen material to see the character of each cut.
Materials and storage
The tools have steel blades and birch wood handles, with an overall length of approximately 170 mm. This boxed version is supplied in a wooden storage box and includes blade caps. Keeping each tool in its place helps you identify the profile you need and check that everything is returned after a session.
A manageable first selection
Begin with a bold design rather than very fine detail. Draw the parts you want to keep, then clear the surrounding areas in short, controlled cuts. Compare a trial print with the carved surface before making further changes. The five-piece selection keeps the choice of tools straightforward while still letting you explore several types of mark.
Keep the blades clean and dry, maintain their edges and replace the caps for storage. Secure the workpiece and keep your supporting hand away from the cutting path. For two additional profiles, compare the seven-piece option on the original Woody Tool Kit page.
