How to choose screen printing ink
Start with the material you want to print, then consider the colour of the fabric and the artwork. These choices matter more than the colour name alone: two inks that look similar in the tub can behave differently on the screen and on the finished print.
Match the ink to your fabric
For T-shirts, tote bags and textile projects, choose an ink intended for fabric screen printing. Check the individual product's compatibility with your material, especially when working with blends or synthetic fabrics. Make a test print on the same fabric before starting a batch. If you are printing paper or card, check that the ink is also recommended for that surface.
Light fabrics or dark fabrics?
Permaset Aqua Standard colours are designed for light toned fabrics. Most are transparent, so the fabric underneath influences the finished colour; Standard White is opaque. For dark garments, look for an ink specifically intended to provide coverage on dark fabric, or a compatible underbase system. Do not assume that every white ink offers the same coverage.
Standard colours or Process colours?
Choose Standard colours for individual colour areas, lettering and repeating patterns. Process Cyan, Process Magenta, Process Yellow and Process Black are designed to work together in CMYK printing, where separated artwork is printed through registered screens. A set of four ordinary colours is not automatically a substitute for a matched Process ink range.
Which size should you choose?
A smaller tub is useful for testing colours and occasional projects. Larger tubs suit repeat work when you know which colours you need. Estimate usage from the printed area, number of items and ink deposit, and allow for test prints. The Permaset Standard colours here come in 300ml tubs, while the Process colours come in 1 litre tubs.
Plan for curing and clean-up
Follow the ink manufacturer's curing instructions and check your fabric's heat tolerance. Permaset Aqua textile prints need heat curing for durable results; touch dry does not mean fully cured.
