The Essdee Lino Cutters and Handle Set brings together five cutting styles for exploring relief-printing marks. This is the L5S set, with styles 1–5 and one handle. Choose it when you want a compact selection for a first lino project, a small working kit or an introduction to interchangeable cutting heads.

What is in the set?

• One polypropylene lino handle with an aluminium ferrule.
• Five precision-ground high-carbon steel cutters, numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

The ferrule allows the cutters to be fitted and tightened in the handle. You can change the cutting head as the design develops rather than needing a separate handle for every profile. The set is for carving: printing blocks, ink, paper and an ink roller are chosen separately.

Explore the five cutting styles

Essdee identifies style 1 for fine lines and cross-hatching, while style 2 is a general-purpose line cutter. Style 3 makes a narrow rounded channel; style 4 provides a wider rounded V profile. Style 5 is a line-marking tool for defining a design before clearing the surrounding material.

Try the profiles on a spare piece of your chosen carving material and label the marks. A small reference block helps you choose a cutter for a particular part of the drawing without relying on memory.

From a drawing to a first proof

Start with a simple motif and identify the areas that should remain raised to print. Work in stages, switching profiles where the design needs a different mark. Make a trial impression before refining the carving: the printed result can reveal background marks that are less obvious on the block itself.
