A larger format for a developed print

Make a full-size paper outline before transferring your design. Check the position of the main shapes, the border you want around the impression and the paper size you intend to use. Breaking the drawing into a few larger areas can make the carving sequence easier to plan. Leave the finer marks until you are happy with the overall arrangement. If your design includes text, reverse it on the block and test the orientation before committing to the finished layout.

Two carving faces

The block has green and blue outer faces with a black core. Either face can be used for carving, and the contrasting core helps you see the areas you have removed. Plan the reverse face before using both sides and protect the surface underneath while you work.

Carve, ink and check a proof

Use suitable carving tools and support the block on a stable work surface. Work in controlled stages, then make a test impression with your chosen relief-printing ink and paper. Check the proof before removing more material. For a larger design, check the print in sections as well as looking at the complete composition. Keeping a few trial impressions helps you decide where to refine the carving before making the finished print.
