Sosaku Beta baren for broad areas of colour
The Michihamono Sosaku Beta Bamboo Baren is intended for wide, flat printing areas and thicker paper. Choose this 13 cm version when a design contains substantial shapes or large passages of colour that need consistent hand pressure. The baren transfers the image from your woodblock by rubbing the back of the paper, making it part of a hand-printing setup that does not require a press.
What distinguishes Beta?
Beta and Sumi share the same diameter but use different internal coils. Michihamono identifies Beta as the version for broad printing areas, while Sumi is intended for fine lines and delicately carved designs. Think about the parts of the image you need to print most often when choosing between them. A bold silhouette or a large colour block presents a different task from a detailed key block.
Materials and dimensions
- Version: Beta, for larger flat areas.
- Diameter: approximately 130 mm.
- Rubbing surface and handle: bamboo sheath.
- Inner coil: varnished paper string.
- Backing disc: ABS plastic.
Printing with controlled pressure
Position the paper over your prepared block and work methodically across the image. Make a proof first, then compare the centre, edges and corners for colour transfer. Adjust your pressure and colour preparation in stages rather than changing several things at once. This gives you a clearer view of what is affecting the impression and helps you develop a repeatable approach.
Paper thickness, the carved image and the amount of colour all affect the result. Use trial sheets to establish a comfortable working pressure before beginning a larger run of prints.
Care between printing sessions
Apply only a small amount of vegetable oil to the bamboo sheath as recommended by Michihamono. Rotate the backing disc gradually during use to help distribute wear. Compare the fine-line Sumi option on the Sosaku Bamboo Baren page.
