Description
Khadi – Mitsumata – 54 × 80cm – 60gsm – Nepalese Lightweight Smooth Natural Washi Paper – 5 Sheets
Khadi Mitsumata Nepalese Washi is a beautifully crafted lightweight, smooth handmade paper produced using traditional fibre techniques and careful sheet formation. Made from the inner bark fibres of lokta and argeli plants, which grow naturally in the high-altitude forests of the Himalayan foothills, this paper combines strength, delicacy and natural character, making it ideal for printmaking, drawing and fine art applications.
Lokta (Daphne bholua), harvested above 3000 metres, produces a strong and durable fibre, while argeli (Edgeworthia papyrifera), harvested above 2000 metres, creates a softer and more delicate sheet. Argeli fibre is also used in traditional Japanese papermaking where it is known as mitsumata, valued for its smooth texture and refined surface. Both fibres are fully renewable, as the plants are cropped above ground level and naturally regenerate, allowing re-harvesting every three to four years.
Khadi mountain papers are uniquely produced using soda ash rather than caustic soda, preserving fibre strength and resulting in a more durable and higher-quality sheet than most modern Nepalese papers. This gentler process maintains the integrity of the fibres while also producing environmentally beneficial runoff that can be used as fertiliser.
The paper is formed using the traditional Japanese nagashizuki dipping and layering technique, where fibres are evenly distributed on a fine bamboo screen (su), then pressed, separated and carefully brushed onto drying boards. This method creates a consistent, smooth surface with excellent strength despite its lightweight feel.
Ideal for printmaking, woodblock, drawing, ink and mixed media work, this natural washi paper offers a refined surface with beautiful handmade character.
