A4 paper for planned printmaking projects
Jackson’s Unica A4 Printmaking Pad contains 15 sheets of 250 gsm paper in a nominal 210 × 297 mm format. Use the sheet size as a starting point when planning an image, its surrounding border and the space needed for a signature or edition notes.
Plan the image and border together
Draw an A4 outline on scrap paper before deciding how large the printed image should be. For example, a centred 150 × 210 mm image leaves nominal borders of 30 mm at each side and 43.5 mm above and below. A smaller motif creates more open space; a larger image leaves less room for handling and notes. Compare portrait and landscape layouts before committing to a design.
Make a proof before a finished run
Test your intended ink, equipment and paper preparation on a spare sheet before working through the pad. Check image placement, detail, coverage and how the paper behaves in your chosen process. A successful result with one ink or preparation does not establish the result with another, so keep the trial relevant to the work you intend to make.
Organise a small printing project
With 15 sheets, you could allocate two to experiments and keep 13 for later printing, allowing for further adjustments as needed. Keep notes of the mixture, sheet orientation, positioning and settings used for each trial. Follow your ink maker’s drying instructions before stacking or handling finished impressions, and assess the results before deciding which prints belong together.
