The Essdee 3-in-1 Lino Cutter and Baren Kit combines interchangeable carving tools with a hand-printing baren and a place to store the cutters. This is the L5B version with five cutters, styles 1–5. It suits a compact printmaking setup where you want carving and hand-printing functions together.

What is included?

• One polypropylene handle with an aluminium ferrule.
• Five precision-ground high-carbon steel cutters, styles 1–5.
• A baren base and cap.

The ferrule secures the selected cutter in the handle for carving. Essdee’s five profiles provide different approaches to line work, outlining and removing material. Explore their marks on a spare block before deciding which profile to use on the finished design.

Convert the tool into a baren

After carving, the kit can be assembled as a baren. A baren applies pressure by hand to help transfer ink from the raised surface of a printing block onto paper. It offers a way to make a relief print without a printing press, using a separate block, suitable ink and printing paper.

Plan a simple image, ink the carved surface and position the paper before applying pressure. Check a trial impression to judge the transfer, then refine the carving or printing setup as needed. The best arrangement will depend on the block, paper and ink you choose.

Keep the cutters with the kit

The baren base also serves as a storage compartment for the cutting heads when they are not in use. This brings the three functions together: carving handle, hand-printing baren and cutter storage.
