Use the 200 × 300 mm Japanese vinyl block for a relief-printing design that needs a broader working area. The rectangular format is useful for planning an illustration, a landscape or a more developed pattern, with room to consider the relationship between large shapes and smaller marks. You receive one double-sided vinyl block with a 3 mm thickness.

Plan an illustration with more breathing room

Begin with a paper template matching the 200 × 300 mm block. Work out how the image will sit inside your chosen printing-paper size, allowing for a border and the way you will position the sheet. Try several arrangements of the main subject before adding detail. A rough layout makes it easier to assess the balance of printed and unprinted space. Reverse any text in the transferred design and identify the areas that should stay raised to carry the ink.

Two carving faces

The block has green and blue outer faces with a black core. Either face can be used for carving, and the contrasting core helps you see the areas you have removed. Plan the reverse face before using both sides and protect the surface underneath while you work.

Carve, ink and check a proof

Use suitable carving tools and support the block on a stable work surface. Work in controlled stages, then make a test impression with your chosen relief-printing ink and paper. Check the proof before removing more material. Keep your drawing and early impressions together so you can compare the design as it develops. A proof often makes unwanted background marks easier to identify than inspecting the carved surface on its own.
