The Sosaku 24mm Hake is the widest Hake in this Michihamono range. It is a horsehair brush for distributing colour on woodblocks, giving you another size to choose when building a practical mokuhanga toolkit. Select it for areas where you want more width than the 15mm or 20mm Hake provides.

Brush size influences how you work across the block. A wider Hake lets you cover a larger strip in each pass, while a smaller one can be easier to position in a compact area. The 24mm size remains a useful companion to narrower Hakes, especially when one print contains several differently sized colour shapes.

Michihamono specifies horsehair with finely split tips. The tips are soft and hold colour, while the brush body stays firm. Together, these characteristics support paint retention and distribution. The finished impression will still depend on your paper, moisture, colour mixture and printing pressure, so take proofs as you refine the process.

Keep a mixing dish and a separate colour-transfer brush within reach. Add prepared water-based colour to the block, and use the Hake to distribute it over the printing area. Work with modest amounts first, then adjust after seeing a proof rather than overloading the brush.

For repeated impressions, keep the colour mixture and preparation routine as consistent as possible. Reserving this brush for one colour or colour family can reduce contamination between layers. A smaller Hake can stay beside it for areas that need a narrower tool.

Clean away colour after your session and allow the brush to dry thoroughly. Michihamono recommends storing the bristles facing down after use, ready for the next printing session.
